December 2013

A Few pictures from December 2013.

Moving the first snow of the year Dec 5th.

Hauling Corn Stalk Bales off the Field Dec 20th.
We use 3 corn stalk bales to bed for the older
heifers every other day. We also mix some in the
feed for the bred heifers in order to stretch the hay.

Madi's fair calf "Squiggles" in the shed checking
out the fresh corn stalk bedding.

Grinding corn for the cows on Dec 22nd when it
was 10 below.  We feed a semi load of ground corn
about every 3 weeks.
By grinding the corn fine the cows
are better able to digest the corn and
it makes for a more efficient use.  Each
milk cow eats between 11-14 lbs of corn
each day.

Tanner helping with chores over
Christmas break.  Below zero in these
pictures to.  Tanner told me this is
why he likes to spend his winters inside.
Tanner working hard bedding wheat straw
for the younger calves.
I think he secretly likes helping.  He will never admit it
but he likes when their are "friendly" calves in the pen.

These calves are 2-3 months old and get a mix
of grass/alfalfa/corn/dry distillers/and mineral.
